May 2012 – Happy Transplanniversary!

Surgeon’s performing Lil’Sophie’s transplant

Well it’s here!!  Lil’Sophies 1yr transplanniversary!  One year ago Bryce and I were standing over our little girl praying as she recovered from her life saving liver transplant.  I’ve had a year to think about this, what I would write on this day… And there is nothing I can possibly write to sum up how we feel.

So many people are praying….

Sophie is doing fantastic (despite her other medical issues).  She’s eating well, happily playing, understands and follows directions, she’s adjusted so well to all that has gone on around her.

I had a meeting with her team of therapists last week to do a progress evaluation. Sophie went around the circle stopping at each therapist to give them an unprompted kiss.  A little girl who should be afraid of everyone, who’s endured pain from most people she’s come in contact with (including her parents who still have to hold her down every week to pull bandages off her skin and then scrub her stent sites with alcohol) – yet she still has the highest form of love and affection for the people around her. That’s a true miracle that ONLY God can provide. Not only has she survived, but she’s living a vibrant life, unafraid.

We are witnessing the essence of Jesus words when he said “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”  There is no explanation for her fearlessness and forgiving spirit except for God’s grace. I think that sums up how we feel on this Transplanniversary date.

It’s taken a village of people to get her /us through this.  And lives were sacrificed to do so. I shed tears for the family that  is morning the loss of their child as I look at the vibrance of mine. All we can do is choke out a “thank you” because nothing else is sufficient and see that your precious donation was not in vain.

If your on the fence about organ donation I encourage you to educate yourself about making that decision here: More About Organ Donation.
