August 2011 – Unsuccessful Bile Duct Fix

Today was another attempt at opening Sophie’s blocked bile duct that’s affecting half of her liver. The surgical team came up with a plan to slowly come at the obstructive scar tissue by inserting tubes/needles into both sides of her abdominal area. The hope was that they could meet in the middle piercing the tissue to create a new opening (new bile duct). However as they proceeded Sophie’s new liver presented a road block. The path needed to make this connection had a vein running through it. They attempted several times to go around the vein and still make the connection but it was becoming too risky. In the process, they nicked the vein and had to call it quits. She was released to the PICU to monitor her blood count as the nicked vein heals. We’ll see what happens overnight. If blood work looks good then she’ll be released tomorrow. But if she loses blood she’ll need a transfusion and more monitoring until the vein can heal.

The team is feeling a sense of defeat as each attempt has thrown them a curve ball. With each failed procedure we are growing one more step closer to more invasive surgery involving reopening Sophie’s belly and cutting into part of her new liver. No one wants to do this, which is why we keep trying these more safe routes. At this point it will take some time for the team to take a breather, reassess, and figure out what’s next.

Thanks for your continued prayers and encouragement.
