August 2011 – Summer’s End

As the summer comes to a close, we reminisce over some great family time. Lil’Sophie’s big sister was with us for several weeks, which was the highlight of our summer. She taught Sophie how to do a “high five” and continued practicing waving, and sign language with her. Lil Sophie also was mesmerized as she watched her big sister play a ukulele and spent time being silly which produced lots of laughs and giggles for everyone. We are incredibly grateful for the silly fun we’ve had and have embraced this family time together!

Now her sister is off at school, and in God’s perfect timing – now is when things with Sophie are starting to get more serious again. Sophie’s bile ducts have continued to cause complications. The specialists have tried several times to put a stent in her blocked duct and can’t get it through. We’ve learned that she has 3 bile ducts in this new liver. One of the ducts is blocked and is effecting over half of her liver. Blocked ducts are fairly normal for liver patients, but the problems is that Sophie’s new liver bile ducts are so close together, that to fix the problem one could damage the other working one(s).

Over the last couple of weeks, a series of events, (too long to list) has currently landed Sophie in the hospital. Her bile is now infected and she’s being treated with antibiotics. This setback has put Sophie and the entire team in a very serious situation. The team now has to figure out how to ‘fix’ the problem bile duct which NONE of them feel comfortable doing.  The next few days the team will strategize how to move forward. I’ll try to update when we know what will take place.

We are asking for prayers for our medical team. They are in great need of wisdom and courage as they brainstorm the issues Sophie’s anatomy presents to them. We are praying for the ‘right’ decision to be made and for a successful procedure. Of course, we always want a miracle for Lil’Sophie – that no procedures need to take place. But whatever happens, we just ask for guidance and healing for our little girlie.

Thanks for continuing to keep us in your prayers.
