May 2011 – Lung Update

So the readers digest of what’s going on is Sophie is now hooked up to a BiPAP machine (sorry can’t do hyperlinks on my phone. For those curious, you’ll have to google it.) Basically it’s similar to a CPAP but tiny for her little nose. The type that fits her is called a Mini-Me, which makes me laugh.
ANYWAY, it seems that it is working and is pushing her lung expansion to 100%. She absolutely hates it, but the Drs have finally landed on a calming medication which is helping her to relax.
Her chest Xray after being on the BiPAP for several hours has shown improvement where it was previously showing a slight collapse. But they can see a little fluid in her lungs. So she will get a dose of diuretics to help push it out of her system.
The Drs are going to try these methods today to get her respiratory levels regulated. If there doesn’t seem to be improvement later today Sophie will be put back on the ventilator.

Although, obviously oxygen is extremely important, this is still a very manageable situation (even if she goes on the vent). In our world, we don’t get too wound up unless we hear the words “liver failure”. So keeping things in perspective, managing respiratory is not so bad. We’ve dealt with far worse situations.
Last night was rough as it took a while for all medical personnel to land on the current respiratory plan. And Lil’Sophie spent the better half of the night crying. So we’re ALL having a quiet, low-key day, resting and waiting.

Thanks so much for thinking of us. I know so many of you are praying and we can’t tell you how much we appreciate it.

    • Thanks Lee! I think we’ve finally struck a nice balance (for now). So we’re resting up for the next phase. We appreciate the prayers so much!
