March 2011 – MRI Update

Mmm... warm blankets & oxygen

Today we had a consultation with the liver transplant team to find out the results of Sophie’s MRI. The good & bad news is, they are certain that Lil’ Sophie needs a liver transplant. During  their testing they ruled that out an extremely dangerous option that was being discussed, which would have included not only a liver, but some other vital organs. But we are thanking God that her tests have shown the other organs are working satisfactorily. So the focus is now narrowed on to just the liver (and the portal vein she’s been missing since birth).
There are things of extreme concern for the surgeon that will make this surgery very difficult. Sophie’s size is a huge factor. He has performed many transplants on children her size but none who’ve had as many complications as she’s presented. Also, because she’s missing a portal vein, they need to be very specific about what kind of liver they receive for her. We were told she’ll be a hard match.
We’re thrilled that we are moving on to the next step. However, it brings soooo many risks, that it’s hard to fight back the fear. Today’s meeting confirmed that choosing to NOT move forward will diminish Lil’ Sophie’s chance of survival completely. So we are choosing to walk in faith, one step at a time….
Just to be clear, as of today, Sophie is NOT listed on the liver list – we have paperwork, tests, and a series of appointments, and insurance approvals before they list her.
But I’ll update again as we move through this process.

  1. My little boy was a liver donor after he suffered brain damage and it was determined he wasn’t going to make it this past January. His liver went to a 7 month old boy, even though my little man was only 7lbs (he was 8 days old when he passed), we’re told the surgery was a success. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and send you all my best wishes things work out for you.

  2. Faith – one day at a time – with the Lord by your side … He will guide! We are praying & holding you all close – Lee

  3. The Lord is holding your hands in this and will continue to do so. I’m pray with you guys and for you.

In response to your question on my blog, the easiest way to link up to my paintings is through my heARTworks blog : and there’s a link to a facebook page there with all the paintings I do.
