October 2010 – Flew the Coop

Someone's happy to be leaving the hospital

That’s right…. We ran out of there as fast as we could. This morning greeted us with yet ANOTHER medication mix up for Sophie. I’ve learned to ask every staff person that walks in the door what meds they are holding in their hand. So just a little note to all of the CHD readers and anyone who is a parent or caregiver…. Pay attention!

Double check. Ask questions. Don’t nod and assume that they know more than you. You are the advocate and need to stay on top of what’s going on.

It’s not because anyone is out to hurt our children. It’s just because we live in a world of inadequacies and mistakes of fallen people. It happens. The communication at medical facilities (especially hospitals with teaching schools attached) end up being like the old ‘telephone’ game. And by the time the communication break down gets to the nurse she’s floundering because she thinks she’s right and is doing what she was told.

Unfortunately, some mistakes are more life threatening.

The biggest mistake I can make is not asking, and I learned that early on when we almost lost Sophie at a different facility.

Anyway….
Enough of that soap box. We are home. Sophie is in her own bed. And we will spend the next 2 days recouping and preparing for surgery.

Thanks for the prayers!

  1. That’s a ‘high five’ to Granma! Be safe…..

  2. Glad to hear all of you get to go home for a couple days. We’ve found it to be so true you have to ask and watch everything they do at the hospitals. Unfortunately, it can happen at any of them. Good luck on Sophie’s surgery. Hugs to all of you.

  3. What a cute picture! I’ve told several people about Sophie and we’re all praying for her!
    Praying for YOU too!

  4. God knew Sophie needed a strong advocate and he chose YOU! Onward to Friday – our ladies Bible study group prayed for Sophie (and all of you) today. 🙂

  5. It’s too bad you have to be so careful & 2nd guess each medication – but good for you!! Sophie will get the best of care – Jesus is making sure of that!! We will pray for clarity, discernment and guidance for all involved in any way w/Sophie’s care!! God Bless, Lee & family

  6. Hope you can rest up for the next few days. Love the picture. It is one of my favorites!

  7. You are great parents!!! Love you all and praying for you every single day – that is one precious little girl!!!

  8. As Grandma Bell used to say, Thank You, LORD!! If you can, imagine all of our hands outstretched to you, and heads bowed to God in prayer. Also, thanks to Denise in the UK for that beautiful comment! Blessings, A. Peg

  9. Thank you everyone!! We so much appreciate it.
